DFID

Department for International Development (DFID)

DFID supports long-term programmes to help eliminate the underlying causes of poverty and also responds to emergencies, both natural and man-made.

AMREF and DFID in partnership

Programme support between AMREF and DFID has traditionally been through DFID's Civil Society Challenge Fund (CSCF), which supoprts activities that improve the capacity of Southern civil society to engage in decision making processes. AMREF currently has four grants under this scheme across South Africa, Tanzania and Ethiopia.

PROJECT IN FOCUS: Haki za Wananchi - Promoting the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS, Tanzania

This project focuses on reducing the stigma and discrimination faced by people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) and aims to achieve a greater awareness and access to comprehensive health services.

The ‘Haki Za Wananchi’ project runs across three urban slums in Dar es Salaam, the capital of Tanzania. Here AMREF has established PLHA support groups and strengthened community and faith based organisations in order to provide good quality, accurate HIV/AIDS information. These groups are also being empowered to advocate for a greater prioritisation of their entitlements within national and local policies and against stigmatisation and discrimination.

Care and support services have also been initiated to ensure local health organisations and service providers offer people living with HIV and AIDS, particularly women, commercial sex workers and deaf people help, support and health services which are good quality and free from discrimination. “I benefitted a lot from the ‘Haki Za Wananchi’ training - though I am HIV positive I now know I have rights just like anyone else. Now I am strong enough to break the silence of my HIV status and I am providing knowledge about sexuality and AIDS to my children." Janeth Mohamed, 50 years old
