Support African communities in crisis
Working with the most vulnerable people on the continent, AMREF is all too aware of the impact of the drought on the communities with which we work.
Our teams are reporting increased malnutrition among women and children, as well as more diarrhoeal diseases and measles due mainly to the ongoing food shortages in these communities.

With our unique position as Africa’s leading Health Organisation, AMREF is hugely concerned about the effects of the drought on already vulnerable populations.
AMREF’s team on the ground in Kenya are currently working with:
- Children and pregnant women, who are highly susceptible to malnutrition and diarrhoea, for which medical care is critical.
- People with HIV and TB, who are defaulting on their treatment as they move away from their usual health facilities to escape the drought.
- People living with HIV and TB, who need nutritional support if their treatment is to be effective.
The drought will continue to have consequences on the health of communities long after
the food shortage has ended.
We have already stepped up activities to increase access to clean water and sanitation facilities for communities affected by the drought in order to prevent outbreak of diseases like cholera and diarrhoea, which would only add to the suffering.
But a lot more needs to be done.
It is essential that long-term strategies are established to reduce the vulnerability of communities to increasingly frequent disasters in the future.
Your gift, or whatever you can afford, will make a real and lasting difference to communities affected by the drought. Please support AMREF and give communities the lifeline they need at this critical time.
Your support will help ensure minimal negative health impacts from the drought in the short-term, and ensure people are better able to cope with its consequences in the future.
£10 could provide water purification tablets to communities who are resorting to digging
for water, to make this water safe.
£25 could support a supplementary feeding programme at a school for two weeks.
£40 could secure transport, fuel and a driver to deliver a week’s worth of food to ten
affected regions.
On behalf of the communities of the Horn of Africa, myself and my team at AMREF, thank you so much for your generosity.
