Meet AMREF UK's Community Champions

We'd like to introduce some of the wonderful people who go the extra mile to support AMREF - from riding bikes to selling plants to walking a marathon, they raise money and awareness at the same time!

This is Nick Hickman, who cycled over 1,000 miles from John O'Groats to Land's End. He says:

“I was lucky enough to work with AMREF last year through GSK's PULSE volunteer partnership programme to facilitate the start up and launch of an EU funded project, improving maternal, new born and child health in Tanzania, Kenya and Southern Sudan.  This experience has made me a passionate supporter of AMREF's mission and I am so excited to be able to use my other passion, for cycling, to raise funds for its vital work!"

Nick raised an incredible £2,090 for AMREF, and said "It was a great challenge but worth every turn of the pedals!"

This is Mike Woodhouse, who organises plant sales. He says:

"I have been involved with AMREF since 1977 when I first met the founder, Michael Wood, and worked in the original AMREF office, in Nairobi, for a short time during a nine month stay in Kenya. I have maintained an interest in the organization throughout the years and have, more recently, been able to raise funds for AMREF by growing plants and selling them from a charity plant stall in my village."

Mike raises about £450 a year for AMREF - a fantastic result!

This is Sara Scanlon, who is doing a bite-sized marathon. She says:

"My family were stunned when I announced I am planning to do a marathon, looking only slightly less sceptical when I explain that it will be a bite-sized marathon. Instead of taking the bus in the mornings I will walk the two miles to the railway station. The busfare, plus gift-aid, goes to AMREF: £27.30 for each marathon that I complete.  I have done one and a half marathons so far and I am enjoying the walk and the chance to get a bit fitter and help AMREF at the same time."

Sara has raised almost £50 for AMREF so far, and says "I am also thinking about sponsoring myself £1.00 for each time that I manage my five-a-day – now there's a challenge!"
